Accessories can add much pizazz to a bland outfit and they don't have to cost a lot. Costume jewelry and some styles from the '80s are back, and people can find cheap accessories at Claire's, Forever 21 and Target. For the pros trying to bling on a budget, a trip to the city is necessary.
Accessories should be worn based on body type, everything should appear proportional. Shorter women should wear tiny earrings and a small bag unless they are trying to make a statement.
For dressier occasions wear a necklace higher, so it appears more formal, and use a smaller purse. Accessories can help disguise or accentuate parts of the body. For example, wearing a belt around the waist can draw attention away from a large bust. It might not be something most women consider, but try to match bras and underwear with outfits, especially ones that are loose-fitting or revealing. This way, just in case an undergarments begin to show, the faux pas can be camouflaged.

Have to wear glasses? Choose a fashionable frame and it can stand apart from the traditional red-rimmed Coke bottle style, giving a more defined look. Glasses Modo $110

When one doesn't have to haul around four thick chemistry books, they should step up from a Jansport book bag and carry a stylish satchel or an oversized purse that you can hold notebooks, pens, lip gloss and your wallet in, making it the perfect two-in-one bag. Bag Target $16

Nails stand out, whether giving a handshake or taking notes, so keep them up with a nice fall hue, such as plum, chocolate brown, candy apple red or even pumpkin orange. Don't be afraid to go bold with lime green or hot pink and accent your nails with a black, gold or silver airbrush effect using a super-thin nail polish brush. Nail polish N.Y.C. $3

Metallic or brightly-colored tights can definitely spice up a dull look. For instance, try pairing a dark blue dress with yellow tights. For something more subtle, but still cute, fishnet stockings do the trick. Fishnet stockings Nine West $12

For a bad hair day or when it's raining, the best accessory is a head band/scarf or hair clip that can keep hair pushed out of the way and give a clean look when hair looks otherwise. Hats and hooded shirts also can give a covered yet demure look. Headband Target $5 Earrings Garage Sale $0.50

A plain-Jane's style can be enhanced by taking solid T-shirts and adding long-beaded, colorful necklaces, big bangles or charm bracelets, big rings and dangling earrings or large hoops. Necklace Target $7

A watch can be more than just a timepiece, it can be a stylish bracelet. There are watches with interchangeable bands so women can wear them with a variety of colors. Watch Paris Delon $9

Makeup can also be a way to update a look with bright-colored eye shadows. Try blue mascara instead of the basic black and a bold-colored lipstick that complements the skin tone. Lipstick Revlon $8

Hair is the boldest and most visible way to accessorize. Try highlighting with a bright color such as a pink, orange or purple to give a look that's sure to stand out in the crowd and make for memorable pictures.

When wearing tops with a jeweled or sequenced neckline, no necklace is necessary. Base the accessorizing on the style of the outfit. Don't wear a lot of jewelry or a colorful purse with plaid, animal prints, multicolored designs or anything that appears busy because the accessories are supposed to complement the outfit, not complicate it.
